Curt, this is for you... your first assignment: dancing stick figures. Here are finished paintings from this assignment from my students over the new Mexican years. Look carefully at the surfaces and notice how the paint has been applied in various layers to create an interesting and varied texture.
First, get a blank piece of paper and cut a rectangle (I used a trimmed business card) to the approximate proportions of your canvas.
Then, using a pencil, draw at least 10 variations of dancing stick figures. Important: make sure that most arms and legs touch the margins in order to create interesting shapes.
When you have selected your winner, copy it onto your canvas using charcoal.
Mix up some watered down raw umber and paint over the charcoal lines.
Color: use warm and cool colors for vibrancy and contrast. I'll talk to you about paint application on the phone.
